Well, the stars aligned just right and the Salmon River cooperated allowing us brief opportunity for Chinook fishing last week. Cooler temperatures brought the Salmon River water level down to a fishable range beginning Wednesday and a few lucky fishermen were able to take advantage of the conditions. Unfortunately, warm weekend temperatures followed by heavy rains yesterday have the river at just under 60,000 CFS this morning and on a straight, uphill rise. NOAA is predicting that the river will peak around 82,000 CFS sometime tomorrow afternoon and will stay in the mid to upper 60,000 CFS level for the next week. This will suspend fishing until the river comes back down to safer levels for the boats.
During our brief fishing opportunity, the average catch rate was 9 hours per fish and the Department of Fish and Game have estimated harvest totals for the Salmon and Little Salmon Rivers at a total of 685 adult and 153 jack Chinook; about 10% of the harvest total set aside for fishermen.
The Idaho Department of Fish and Game has raised the daily limit to 6 Chinook (2 adults over & 4 jacks) for 2011′s spring Chinook salmon season on the Salmon and Little Salmon rivers. Only hatchery salmon can be harvested and closing dates will be announced by the Department of Fish and Game when harvest quotas are met.
