The Chinook have decided to migrate and it’s hard not to get excited when you see the numbers at Bonneville Dam! The last 9 days have showed a flourish of fish crossing this first dam along their big swim toward the Idaho river systems and as of yesterday, May 8, a total of 106,585 adult Chinook have crossed Bonneville; 15,000 on May 1 and 10,000 on May 6. These are awesome numbers but when we all really get excited is when we see those BIG numbers and impressive days begin at Lower Granite – as of yesterday, 1571 adult Chinook have crossed Lower Granite.
On average, we see the arrival of the Chinook run in the Salmon River system about 5-6 weeks after they’ve crossed Bonneville Dam and about 10-14 days after they’ve crossed Lower Granite Dam. In 2011, we anticipate seeing Chinook salmon in the Riggins area around June 5 through 12 and hope that the high water season does not prove problematic for this fishery. Stay tuned…the weekly fish reports are back and Exodus will keep you updated.
The Idaho Department of Fish and Game has set a daily limit of 4 Chinook (2 adults & 2 jacks) for 2011′s spring Chinook salmon season on the Salmon and Little Salmon rivers. Only hatchery salmon can be harvested and closing dates will be announced by the Department of Fish and Game when harvest quotas are met.
