Happy belated Thanksgiving! Hopefully everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday.
Our current water level is 5020 CFS, with a water temperature of 33 degrees. The Salmon River is running crystal clear and free of ice. Winter seems to have found us here in the region and hopefully everyone survived the artic temperatures and snow that we have been dealing with since last Tuesday. Slush ice formed on Friday causing a temporary suspension on the fishing however by late Saturday afternoon the ice was gone and the river level and water temperature had begun to rise again. The Riggins weather forecast for this week is predicting rain/snow mixed precipitation with daytime highs in the low to mid 40’s and evening lows in the 30’s. Today will be the driest day of the week and this evening will be the coldest; precipitation chances are higher during the early part of the week.
With the winter-like weather and the onset of Thanksgiving, our fishing trips really slowed down but the fishing was fantastic! Just 13 people fished with Exodus last week, hooking into 61 fish and landing 42; that is 4.7 fish hooked into and 3.2 fish landed per person.
Fishing clients may have been few but there sure were lots of big beautiful fish! This week’s BIG FISH shout-out goes to Mark Campbell from Kuna, Idaho, who landed a monster 35” hatchery Steelhead on November 22nd while fishing with drift boat fishing guide Norm Klobetanz. Mark and his wife Denise also get this week’s MOST FISH shout-out; together they hooked into 15 fish and landed 8. Way to go team Campbell and way to go Norm!
As the Fall Steelhead season begins to wind, down don’t forget that the Winter/early Spring Steelhead season will be in its prime from early February to mid-March. Those big South Fork fish will be migrating through the area and season records on big fish are typically broken. Given how many monster fish we have already seen, I can hardly wait to see what February and March produce!
Remember to purchase your Riggins Steelhead Derby Ticket before you go fishing. Over $8000.00 in prize money, trips and gifts to be won for biggest hatchery fish for places 1st through 7th.
